You keep saying "whatever." That's the problem.

Context engineering is the difference between telling AI "just do this" and getting back exactly what you needed. Most people are stuck on "just do this." They type a vague request, get a decent result, and move on — never realizing the same AI could produce something on a completely different level if they told it what they actually wanted.
The concept is simpler than it sounds. It's figuring out what you want, then handing AI the background knowledge, rules, style, and constraints it needs to deliver it. The gap between a generic output and a precise one isn't about the AI being smarter. It's about you being specific.
Food makes this concrete.


"Make Me Whatever"

You walk into the kitchen at home. "I'm hungry. Make me whatever." Mom opens the fridge, works with what's there. Scrambled eggs, leftover pasta, soup from whatever she finds. It's good — it's mom's cooking. You're full, you're warm.
But one day a thought creeps in. You want something specific. You try to pin it down and can't. All you can say is "something good." Mom does her best, but she doesn't know what you're after, and neither do you. So every meal lands in roughly the same place. Fine, but never that.


Then You Taste Something

A friend takes you to a small Italian place down an alley. The carbonara arrives. One bite and you think: that's it.
After that, everything shifts. "I want whatever" turns into "I want that flavor again." And you start learning. The richness comes from egg yolks whisked with Pecorino Romano — no cream. Guanciale, not bacon. Starchy pasta water to bind the sauce. A generous crack of black pepper at the end is what brings it alive.
Now you can say what you want. And you go find it — a high-end restaurant, a hole-in-the-wall, a street stall in another country. The price and ambiance don't matter. What matters is: this place nails the exact flavor I'm after.


What Changed

What changed wasn't the food. It was you. You went from not knowing what you wanted to knowing precisely — and once you knew, you could find it anywhere. You could tell the chef "cream-based pasta, strong pepper finish" instead of "whatever." You could recognize that mom's kitchen, great as it is, might not stock guanciale and Pecorino Romano. Specificity gave you range.

Context engineering is everything that moves you from the left column to the right. What background knowledge does AI need? What rules should it follow? What style, what constraints, what audience? Stack those up and hand them over, and AI stops responding like the home kitchen — it responds like the chef at the restaurant you chose.
And the restaurant doesn't have to be fancy. If you want carbonara, the alley Italian place is the answer. If you want curry udon, the street stall is the answer. Context engineering isn't about making AI more sophisticated. It's about getting AI to match exactly what you need.


What Happens If You Don't

You spend your whole life saying "whatever." Every meal is fine. But you never have the experience of thinking "yes — this is what I wanted today."
Keep telling AI "just do what you can" and it stays at the home-kitchen level forever. Perfectly usable, never distinctly yours. Once you know what you want, say it clearly, and set up the right context — the same AI produces something you wouldn't have thought it could.
Mom's "whatever" is comfortable. Knowing the flavor you want, and finding the place that makes it, is a different experience entirely.
